In the base game, gold tiles appear now and then on reels 2 to 4. In Mahjong Ways 2 free spins, reel 3 is fully gold on every fall.

Any gold tile that joins a win comes back as a Wild after the next cascade, so the middle reel keeps feeding Wilds into the chain.

At the same time the multiplier bar switches to x2, x4, x6 and x10. Put those two together and you see where the 100,000x ceiling comes from: a long chain in free spins stacks Wilds and the top multiplier on the same spin.
